More on Nano screen issues...

OK folks there are two issues plauging the screens on the Nano.

Firstly, they scratch easily. This should be of no surprise to anyone. It's a polycarbonate! If you put your Nano in your pocket or whatever expect it to get some minor scuffs. No big deal. In fact the plastic covering the screen is made of the same material used in all other iPods. So don't whinge.

The second issue is more significant. Some of the screens will break. Crack. Nasty. Apple are claiming that this is due to a manfacturing error and only occurs in a tiny percentage ("one tenth of one percent") of cases. The good news is that they will replace your Nano in the event that this happens to you.

Currently it's buggy, and the video must be pre-converted to the right size (and to monochrome if you're running a non-colour iPod) but it's still pretty cool.

Personally? Way too small. I'll stick with my 3rd Gen 40GB model (though I lust after the longer battery life of the 4th Gen/Photos). However, if you've got a reasonably small music collection it looks great!

Apple announcements

OK, it's official and it's everywhere. Turns out most of the rumours were true.

Here's the news. We now have an iTunes phone. We now have the iPod Nano (tiny, flash based, 2 & 4GB). iTunes 5.0 has been released. Oh, and there's going to be a special-edition Harry Potter iPod with all of the stories stored as audiobooks.

ThinkSecret looks like they've got the scoop.

iPod mini's will move entirely to flash-based memory (4, 6 & 8 Gig) and will get colour screens.

The Shuffle will gain a 2Gig model and pricing for current models will drop.

The iTunes-enabled mobile will be announced soon (Sept 7th).
